What is Male Pelvic Health Physical Therapy?

Male pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized form of therapy aimed at diagnosing and treating issues related to the pelvic floor, which includes muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the bladder, bowel, and prostate. While many people may associate pelvic floor dysfunction with women, men can also experience a range of pelvic health issues that can significantly impact their daily lives.

What Happens During A Treatment Session?

1. Evaluation:
During your evaluation your physical therapist will ask questions and obtain a detailed history.. This may include discussions about medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle factors. A physical therapist will then evaluate muscle function, flexibility, and posture, often using specialized techniques to identify dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles. During the evaluation visit, most assessments and interventions are completed externally, to look at the contributing factors affecting the pelvic floor’s function.

2. Education:
Understanding the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor is crucial. Your therapist will educate you on the why behind your symptoms and create a unique plan of care to address the root of the problem.
3. Therapeutic Exercises:
Just like any other part of the body, the pelvic floor muscles can be strengthened or relaxed through specific exercises. Your therapist is trained to design personalized exercise programs that may include pelvic floor, hip and low back strengthening and mobility techniques.

4. Manual Therapy:
Techniques such as myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and soft tissue mobilization may be used to address tightness or pain in the pelvic region.

5. Behavioral Strategies:
At Roots, we know you are more than your pelvic floor and we take a holistic approach to educate on lifestyle modifications, including stress, diet and hydration recommendations which can be crucial in managing symptoms and improving overall pelvic health.

Our Approach to Healing

A pelvic floor evaluation is 90 minutes long. We use this time to get to know you and to understand your unique condition. We perform a head-to-toe assessment of your posture, flexibility, stability, mobility, balance and functional movement patterns. Your PT will provide thorough education on the likely cause of your symptoms and provide the beginning stages of intervention. Throughout the process you will work together with your provider to create a treatment plan that works for you.
